Plasma bolts streaked in Maxâs direction from the goonâs assault rifle. Despite all of her focus and concentration, she had missed the creep. She ducked out of the way just as the plasma bolts rocketed through the cab, entering from the back window, exiting through the front window.
The cab continued to dart through traffic, weaving through the crowded downtown streets. The cabâs AI connected with the nearby vehicles. Due to the nature of the situation, it activated an emergency protocol and requested the neighboring vehicles come to a halt, blocking the roadway. But the SUV just swerved around them and drove onto the sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians and anything else in the way.
The would-be roadblock had opened up a little distance between the two vehicles. The cab swung left at the next intersection, then a quick right on Norfolk Avenue.
The SUV squealed around the corner behind them, and a flurry of plasma bolts soon followed as they opened fire on the cab.
Max angled her weapon through the back window and squeezed off another several rounds until the slide locked forward. She ducked down, pressed the mag release button, dropped the magazine out, and slapped another one in. She was quickly running out of ammo.
Silas was blasting at the SUV with his plasma rifle, trying to hit the fuel cell, or any critical part of the vehicle.
Sam curled on the floorboard with his fingers in his ears, covered with shards of glass.
Max peered through the back window. Her eyes widened at the sight of an RPG emerging from a side window of the SUV. The rocket launcher swung around, taking aim at the cab. An instant later, sparks were spitting from the tail of the rocket, leaving a trail of propellant smoke in its wake. It ripped through the air, the piercing sound echoing off the tall skyscrapers.
Maxâs heart leapt into her throat. She swallowed hard. There was nothing she could do but hang on and pray.
The rocket sped straight toward the cab. The automated driver swerved at the last moment as the grenade slammed into the asphalt. It exploded in a blinding ball of flame, taking out a chunk of the roadway. Black bits of asphalt spidered in all directions. A plume of smoke billowed into the sky. The force of the explosion tipped the cab up on two wheels, then onto its roof. Max felt like she was inside a washing machine, tumbling on spin cycle. All of the glass that was on the floor scattered again. Maxâs head slammed into the roof, bending at an unnatural angle. If she survived, she was going to be sore for the next few days, that much was certain.
The cab showered sparks as the metal roof ground against the roadway. Body panels twisted and crumpled. The horrid screeching sound was like nails on a chalkboard. The overturned cab scraped across the street and slammed into a parked vehicle. More glass shattered. Metal panels collapsed and crunched. The impact slammed Max into the front seat, almost flinging her through the front windshield.
